Friday morning

My dear Henry

This is a line by morning post to tell you that Goodwin <1> was taken to the Asylum (near Box) yesterday without the slightest difficulty. He has a kind friend in the Police who has been visiting him constantly & gives much help to the family since these trying events occurred. (You know the Police Station is in Orange Grove) – This friend accompanyed <sic> him yesterday, along with the Brother. They report that he asked few questions, such as they easily answered; that he enjoyed the drive, and appeared quite pleased with the place when they left him – He had asked for, and was given tea & toast on his arrival – and was sitting comfortably in an arm chair close to a bright fire. The officials received him very kindly & the brother & friend returned perfectly satisfied that he would be better cared for there than at home – Weather blustery & showery this morning – all appearance of frost gone.

Your affectionate

Constance

Notes:

1. George Goodwin (d. 1875), footman at Lacock Abbey. [See Doc. No: 03917].
