Wednesday April 21.

My dear Father

I am very glad this arrangement will do, as it saves me a great deal of trouble. I am going up to town by the express that leaves here 9.50. in the morning & shall therefore become visible to you latish lateish in the evening I don’t think I shall want anything more formideable than tea when I arrive. I was very much pleased with Melrose. Ivan Szabo <2> has taken Ela’s <3> & my photograph & the others are going on Friday. I will not forget the things you left.

2. Iván Szabó (1822–1858), a Hungarian photographer, learned his craft in St Andrews before setting up his studio in Edinburgh in 1857. He was considered one of the premier portrait photographers in Scotland.
