My dear Father

As you were kind enough to propose to get me a horse when I was at Lacock, I talked to Mr Headlam <1> about it, but at last gave it up, as he suggested amongst other things that we should probably be able to play cricket in the afternoons in summer. But it seems that there is very little chance of cricket for the one of us who is most of a player, says he doesnt like playing on a field, which is not properly layed down, and I dont think any will be layed down. He is the one whom Mr Headlam mentioned as wi likely to go shares in a pony’s keep. I dont think that is a satisfactory way of managing it. I mentioned to him that I had thought of getting a pony here, & he says he knows of a good one whose h owner is wants to sell it, only if if of course every day diminishes the chance of getting it for it might be sold. If you thought it a good plan, I might set about making arrangements. As to selling the creature again would not the best plan be to take it down south and ride it in the summer, & sell it there, for it [illegible deletion] would probably sell better than where there are many good ones to be had.

He mentions also a horse to be had in the neighbourhood which he recommends. probably about 30 £ I am afraid you wont find this a very clear letter, but I thought it as well to write at once having told Mr Headlam that I have done so.

Today is very fine and sunny. (Wednesday)

Your affect. son
Charles Talbot.
