My dear Henry
On a recent visit to London, I found two letters from you, of ancient date, one of which informs me that you have become a grandfather on which auspicious event, I tender my congratulations. Time certainly rolls on, but after all, it is only the same hoop that he is trundling, the same cycle continually beginning and ending – I am getting rather tired of seeing the same thing over again and disposed to agree with Solomon.
I am amusing myself here by investigating the ruins of the abbey church which was connected with the old monastery. It was far more extensive than I had any idea of.
Are you ever going to live at Lacock again? I often wonder what the attraction of Scotland in winter can be!
Yours very truly
