My dear Papa

I have long owed you a letter, but Mamma and Monie have kept you au fait of our proceedings, and left me I fear but little to say. We are expecting every day to hear of your coming to Edinburgh & begin to think that you mean to pop upon us unexpectedly; neither should we have know when to expect Charles had you not happened to mention him in your letter to Rosamond –

We have had very mild weather since we arrived, and several wet days but today it has become foggy & does not seem likely to clear.

Would it be too much trouble for you to bring “Lord Elgins Mission to China” with you, when you come – Mamma was wishing for a map of the Country and I remember there is a very good one in the first volume, I think. Have you made out what has become of the poor Times Correspondent in China? I have forgotten his name and do not know whether he is still among the missing prisoners or not.

Dr Guthrie is making a general collection throughout Edinburgh for his Ragged Schools – the funds having been so sadly reduced on account of the withdrawal of the government grant that they were short of 600 pounds – and he feared he should be obliged to turn away 70 children – They say he was deeply affected on adressing [sic] the meeting held the other day to consider the case, & a Report was circulated and left at each house in which it was stated that if they were enabled to get through this winter they hoped next year to get Parliament to restore the money – and the appeal has been so liberally responded to, that we hear that they have already got 12 hundred £bs and are still collecting. Every body takes an interest in the [illegible deletion] schools and the system is doing so much good – wherever it has been tried

Tilly & Mr Clark dined with us yesterday and we want to have them as much as we can now before they get many Evening engagements and they are already beginning to receive invitations to dinner. –

Mamma desires me to say that she is writing to you by todays post directed to the Athenæum – her letter contains a comission [sic] which she hopes you will be able to do for her in London. As I suppose you are still at home I direct to Lacock –

Your affectionate daughter Ela.
