Friday 27th May

My dear Papa

Thank you for forwarding Monie’s letter which I received this morning. Do you wish it back again or any others that may be sent?

I keep it for the present to show to Tilly. – I go to Dabton today – She has a small dinner-party of Ministers and their wives and wanted me to go to make one more as her numbers have fallen short. I saw her yesterday as she came down to church at Dumfries – likewise John & Jack & Miss Mohun. I like the building of the new church – the simply wood work of the roof &c in the interiour <sic> looks well against the red stone – but Mr McEwen is simply intollerable <sic> – Just returned from London he is at present engaged in teaching his congregation the newest fashions – when and how to bow &c &c – they are all complaining of him.

I shall post this at Dumfries so you will get it a day sooner.

I hope Mama got my note written on Wednesday.

Good-bye, dear Papa

Yr affecte daughter

Ela

I was afraid they would be getting too hot in Italy. – but I hope they will be able to manage Pompei before they leave the South. Weather here Summer at last. but they have had rain for a fortnight and Willie and Mamai have colds in consequence.

I have got a shocking pen.
