My dear Henry
You have no doubt heard of the death of our dear Cousin Mary Anne, hers was a very short illness but she did not suffer much I heard from Henrietta Shakespear her half Sister. Poor Mary & the two boys are very much to be pitied they have no one who can replace her in any way & where they will live I cannot think. of course the latter will be at school for some time but there is no one now to whom they can communicate their troubles & vexations or apply to in any little difficulty for advice &c indeed they seem very destitute of sympathizing relations & I am truly grieved for them. We are now returning to Lanelay having been at Markeaton Leamington & Gloucester for the last three weeks it was a tiresome Journey owing to the changes in the railroad but we were well repaid by the kind & hearty welcome we met with & tho’ the time of year made most places desolate enough we did not mind that. I walked about at Markeaton & visited Derby when we had a fine day, as well as going to Mackworth Church One day we drove to Kedleston which we admired very much & another day to Sandiacre for Uncle Wm to see the curious old Church it is in bad repair but the windows must have been very handsome.
Mamma is not very well I am sorry to say & this stormy weather keeps her indoors. we hope to get back to Lanelay tomorrow. Will you let me know if I shall send you the plants you wished to have now & how are they to be directed? We go to the Westward about Christmas time most probably.
I am your affate
Coz Mary
