. . excusez-la et croyez-moi toujours

Votre affectionnée
A. P.

[Translation:]

Monie has been interrupted by the visit of Lady Gibson Craig and I have taken responsibility for finishing her letter.

This morning we saw Mrs Napier who wishes to give a grand ball for her daughter’s coming out: she made us promise not to forget to tell Charles on whom she positively counts for this occasion. Until now there has not been much going on in town, but they say it is going to start. The opening of the new theatre took place on Saturday with great brilliance. They say it is highly elegant and very well heated, and comfortable with regard to the seats.

I fear poor Mama will have bad weather at Carruchan; here it is rainy and so gloomy that you can’t see a thing. Would you be kind enough to direct Wilkins to look after our little fig trees: their fruit is excellent and no bigger than a small plum. They live outside happily in Summer and require only moderate warmth.

I see that I have just written a repetition . . . pray excuse it and believe me ever

your affectionate
A. P.
