Je suis très–reconnoissant de l’offre que veut bien me faire Monsieur Talbot. Voilà pourquoi je n’ai pas voulu lui donner la peine de faire le voyage du Luxembourg <1>.
J’ai écrit au célèbre voyageur Burchell pour lui demander communication d’une plante (Uncaria) qu’il a observée au Cap de Bonne Espérance, dans l’intérieur des terres, et je n’en ai point reçu de réponse. Monsieur Talbot me rendroit un véritable service s’il avoit l’extrême bonté de chercher M. Burchell et de savoir de lui si je puis espérer quelque chose de sa complaisance.
Je suis si occupé dans ce moment qu’il me sera impossible de préparer avant le depart de Monsieur Talbot les paquets qu’il auroit la bonté d’emporter avec lui.
Je porte moi-même ce billet à sa porte et serai bien heureux si je puis lui renouveler de vive voix tous mes remerciemens avec l’expression de mon sincère dévouement.

I wrote to the renowned traveller Burchell to ask him for information on a plant (Uncaria) that he observed inland at the Cape of Good Hope and I have received no reply from him. Mr Talbot would be doing me a great service if he should be so terribly kind as to look up Mr Burchell and find out from him if I can expect him to show me some indulgence.
I am so busy at the moment that it will be impossible for me to prepare the packages, in time for Mr Talbot’s departure, that he would have been so kind as to take with him.
I am delivering this note to his door myself and will be very happy if I can renew my thanks and express my sincere devotion in person.
