Rome. Jan. 31. 1848
My dear Talbot
Altho’ you will probably receive intelligence of what has been going on of late at Naples & by the same post that will convey this letter, still I think it right to tell you that I have seen the English Consul this morning – his letters announce that the King has given way – conceded every thing to Naples & Sicily – & Naples was one scene of Carnival like rejoicing – the King all popular! – we are very sorry to learn of the unpleasant occurrence at Palermo – doubtless your Sisters are safely lodged again there. These civil wars are not very pleasant for strangers! We came here on the 5 Decr & enjoyed our long tour greatly – tho’ evid<ently> it was too much for both of us – accordingly I fell sick as soon as I got to Rome – but now am quite myself again – & enjoy <illeg> much Chary is not very brisk – The Nicholls all well – <save?> poor Lucy – she varies. The news from Naples came last night – & the populace paraded the streets singing – with torches – to a late hour! A friend tells me that you have been writing with effect in the Lit. Gazette in reply to an article in the Q. Rev<iew.> Unluckily the L. Gazette is almost the only English paper not taken in at <illeg> – & I have not seen a L. Rev. since we left England on 26. Augt. I shall be very glad of a line from you, directed Posta restanta, Roma. Chary begs her kind love to Mrs Talbot, yourself & your children – & I remain
Yours sincerely
John M. Traherne.
