Athenæum <1>
Saturday<2>

Dear Whewell

Ld Lansdowne <3> has kindly invited me to meet you at Bowood <4> next Tuesday and therefore I hope you will drive over and see Lacock Abbey on Wednesday and I shall be most happy to show it to you – my family are in Cumberland.

Yours ever truly
H.F. Talbot

Notes:

1. Athenaeum Club, Pall Mall, London: WHFT’s club; a gentleman’s club composed primarily of artists and scientists

2. See Doc. No: 08251, written on Saturday 17 November 1860. Since there is an immediacy to the tone of this letter, WHFT's to Whewell was probably written one of the two previous Saturdays. WHFT's family was in Cumberland at this time - See Doc. No: 08245.

3. Henry Petty Fitzmaurice, 3rd Marquess of Lansdowne (1780–1863), MP, WHFT’s uncle.

4. Bowood House, nr Calne, Wiltshire, 5 mi NE of Lacock: seat of the Marquess of Lansdowne
