Dear Henry

I am afraid I shall not be in town so soon as you expected, but when you are touring about pray write to me & tell me where you are that if possible I may be able to join you somewhere my direction will be

Duisk Lodge; Girvan <1>
Ayrshire –

I hope Lily <2> has recovered & started on her tour; if you write to Caroline <3> give my best love & beg her to let me have a copy of George’s <4> picture when she has leasure

Yours Affec
J. Fox Strangways –

Notes:

1. Duisk Lodge was actually in Colmonell, a small village in South Ayrshire, Scotland, just in from the ocean - its postal service was through the nearest town, Girvan. It was reported to have been a hiding place for Robert Bruce.

2. Lady Elisabeth Theresa Feilding, née Fox Strangways, first m Talbot (1773–1846), WHFT’s mother.

3. Caroline Augusta Edgcumbe, née Feilding, Lady Mt Edgcumbe (1808–1881); WHFT’s half-sister.

4. Maybe George Strangways, a son of the Rev the Hon Charles Strangways. He is not mentioned in Burke’s, which would be the case if he died young, and this is possibly the reason why John Strangways wants a copy of his portrait.
