Monsieur,

Translation:

Sir,

The herbarium <2> which I am sending with this letter contains some plants which I have been unable to identify satisfactorily; you were kind enough to say that you would write down their names. I have enclosed the leaves from the Scorzonera graminifolia, which I have found three times in France, namely at Bagnères, between Bordeaux and Blaye, and between La Rochelle and Niort where it was growing amongst Fritillary and Orobus albus. You will also find enclosed other specimens of the Nice Crocus in accordance with the desire you expressed to have some. As far as the place where they can be found is concerned, they grow on the mountain between Nice and Villefranche, nearer Nice, at a height of about 200 or 300 feet, among the Pistacia Lentiscus and alongside the Orchis Robertiana. There are many of them. The fruit appears soon after the flower. Unfortunately, I can find no mention of the time when I picked it, but I remember that the flowering is not very short. I am leaving for England on Wednesday morning; if there are any plants or books which you would like to send to London, in entrusting them to me, you can be certain that I will take the utmost care of them.

Please accept, Sir, the expression of my sincere regards –
