Monsieur

Translation:

Dear Sir,

On receiving your Theodolite I hastened to have it mended, and the damage caused by the fall was easily repaired. But the Carrier to whom I gave 10 paolis as you instructed, did not come to collect it, and I doubt that he returned here without letting me know. In view of this I asked one of my friends, Dr Lei, who is leaving for Rome tomorrow, to undertake the transport of the Machine; and you will find it at Mr Francesco Evangelisti’s, where my friend will go after stopping for a few days at Forli.

You will notice that your instrument has been returned to its original state, but there are small faults which are those of the original instrument and which could not be so readily removed; for it is more difficult to repair certain parts than to reconstruct them entirely. The circle for example, is not exactly perpendicular to its rotational axis, it is still a little off centre; and as a result the 20 divisions of the vernier do not always correspond to the 19 divisions of the edge. On one side they are greater, on the other they are smaller. Or perhaps the error stems from some inaccuracy in the divisions of the circle, but certainly in spite of these small defects, the instrument is precious, and as you say a veritable jewel.

The Micrometer that you would like will be finished in February and it can be fitted not only to your achromatic telescope, but also to another even larger one, or even to a Newtonian telescope.

I received Mr Babbage’s paper that you were so kind as to send me. I find it extremely interesting and one must admit that Machines executing such varied operations are quite marvellous and sing the praises of their inventor who is already known here for other Mathematical works. So I thank you infinitely, and I ask you to continue your learned correspondence with me. In this hope I have honour of being with much consideration

Your very humble and very obedient Servant

Notes:

1. WHFT owned this surveying instrument, that he called a ‘patent theodolite’, designed after Schmalcalder’s patent of 1812. The instrument is now located at the National Museum of Scotland (NMS.T. 1936.92).

2. Instrument for precise measurement of ‘subdivisions d’une échelle’; vernier circulaire: for measuring arcs.

3. Prof Charles Babbage (1792–1871), mathematician & inventor, On Machinery for Calculating and Printing Mathematical Tables, (Edinburgh: A. Constable, 1822). [See Doc. No: 01014].
