Les plantes de Salzmann <1> sont enfin arrivées, & si je juge du paquet qui vous est destiné par celui que notre voyageur a préparé pour moi, vous serez également satisfait et du choix des espèces et du soin avec lequel les échantillons ont été desséchés.
Votre paquet renferme 275 especes, dont 240 à 25 fr. les 60 font 100 fr., et 35, plus précieuses, à 10 sols l’échantillon font 17 fr 10s. Ajoutez 30 sols pour l’emballage, & vous aurez un total de 119 fr. de France, que je vous prie, Monsieur, de faire parvenir directement à Salzmann, chez MM. Lichtenstein et Vialars, banquiers à Montpellier, à moins qu’il ne vous soit plus facile de vous acquitter à Paris. Dans ce cas, je toucherois ici la somme désignée et je me chargerois de la faire parvenir à Salzmann.
Il va sans dire que vous ne devez pas payer avant d’avoir examiné les objets que vous achetez. Je vous prie donc, Monsieur, de vouloir bien m’indiquer par quelle voie je dois vous expédier le paquet qui vous est adressé. Je me conformerai en tout point à vos desirs.
Thomas devoit m’écrire une fois tous les mois. Il n’en a rien fait, et j’ignore si son voyage remplira notre attente. Mais j’ai eu de lui des nouvelles indirectes, & je sais qu’il étoit aux environs de Cagliari, il y a environ six semaines. Le pays est riche, et neuf. L’homme supporte la fatigue à merveille. Il est plein d’activité et de zèle. Son intérêt veut qu’il nous serve bien. Je suis donc plein d’espoir, et je me plais à penser que bientôt nous posséderons, vous et moi, les trois quarts des plantes qui croissent spontanément en Sardaigne.

Dear Sir,
Salzmann’s plants have finally arrived, & if I am to judge the parcel destined for you by the one that our traveller prepared for me, you will be equally satisfied by both the selection of species and the care with which the samples have been dried.
Your package contains 275 species, of which 240 at 25F per 60 making 100F, and 35, more valuable ones, at 10 sols per sample making 17F 10s. Add 30 sols for packaging, & you will have a total of 119 French Francs, that I beg you, Sir, to send directly to Salzmann, c/o Messrs Lichtenstein and Vialars’, bankers in Montpellier, unless it is easier for you to pay in Paris. In that case, I would withdraw the sum indicated here and would take responsibility for having it sent to Salzmann.
It goes without saying that you will not have to pay before examining the goods. I beg you therefore, Sir, to kindly let me know by which means I should send the package addressed to you. I will conform in every way to your wishes.
Thomas was to write to me once a month. He has done nothing of the sort, and I have no idea whether or not his travels will meet our expectations. But I have had indirect news of him, & I know that he was in the Cagliari region, around six weeks ago. The country is rich, and new. The man is wonderful at enduring tiredness. He is full of activity and zeal. It is in his own interest to serve us well. I am therefore very hopeful, and I delight in thinking that soon you and I will have in our possession three quarters of the plants that grow wild in Sardinia.
