1. William Cavendish, 6^th Duke of Devonshire (1790–1858), the "Bachelor Duke" (albeit not without female companionship) who died unmarried.

2. William Cavendish (later, 7^th Duke of Devonshire, 1808–1891), eldest son of William Cavendish (1783–1812); in 1829, he had been 2^nd Wranger at Trinity College, Cambridge.

3. The British Coffee House, in Cockspur Street, London, had been a political meeting point since the 18^th century and was known as "long a house of call for Scotchmen".
