Notes:

1. William Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire (1790–1858), the "Bachelor Duke" (albeit not without female companionship) who died unmarried.

2. William Cavendish (later, 7th Duke of Devonshire, 1808–1891), eldest son of William Cavendish (1783–1812); in 1829, he had been 2nd Wranger at Trinity College, Cambridge.

3. The British Coffee House, in Cockspur Street, London, had been a political meeting point since the 18th century and was known as "long a house of call for Scotchmen".
