My dear Henry.

Thomas Moore, <1> & indeed every creature in the Parish except myself, is gone to the Assizes at Salisbury but I will take care to attend the Vestry on Friday, & have your wishes complied with, which seem to me to be “that you wish Clark <2> & Moore to be authorized by the Parish to go to Uley <3> to make all possible enquiries as to the system there adopted, but you do not wish them to go till they hear from you” – If they are to go before you return you had better make out a statement, of the Points you wish them particularly to apply themselves to – I had a long conversation with Paley <4> this morning – he has started a difficulty about a work home, even supposing there was money to build one which is that almost all the people in the Parish receiving relief are married & have children, & he does not see how the Work Home can be made to lodge Families – This however is a Point to be enquired about at Uley where I understand – They are in a situation with respect to their Poor [assets?] similar to our own – He has also been talking to me about the way in which the billeting system has been abused – which is really well worthy of your consideration & attention, & about which you must do something, to assist Thomas Moore, whose situation with respect to the Farmers, depending on them as he does for his existence is rather difficult. but this is a matter to be talked over when we meet – only do not bet or forget it – I was at Bath yesterday & saw the Fords <5> – I picked up that Emma <6> & all are to be soon in Town about Settlements & things – that they return to Wales for the marriage & then go abroad – I heard also that Sr Christopher <7> was very unwell, though now rather better
