My dear Sir

I was extremely sorry to hear of the vexatious and uncivil treatment you met with at the Barrier of the Bar by the Commissioner of Police with regard to Ma^lle Petit’s ^<1> passeport, such a proceeding was till now unprecedented, and the french consul to whom I mentioned it said that as he could get no redress to the many representations that he had already made to M^r Grattan ^<2> that he would inform the Minister of the Interior with his proceedings who he had no doubt would reprehend him. I have written myself on the subject to Lord Grandville ^<3> that such a systeme of annoyance might be stopped. Should I ever succeed in getting you repaid of the 12£ you paid to the postillion you sent back here, I will pay them to Lady Valletort ^<4> as you desire me
