My dear Sir,
Your’s of the 8th has just reached me – Mr Gyde’s <1> conduct is greatly provoking & incomprehensible – I cannot conceive what he could be thinking of when he published your paper <2> in the philosophical Magazine – I have written to Him to send me your letter & the fist page of M.S. immediately – There will be a council next week when I will communicate your letter & inform you of the result. Mr Hatchett is here, & I am to dine with him to meet Brande <3> on Sunday I shall take the opportunity of consulting with them as to what can best be done in the abominable dilemma to which Mr Gyde’s strange conduct has reduced us – I am inclined to think with You that the best thing will be to unite the two parts of the paper and publish them together, with a note (by yourself) explanatory of the reason of the first portion having already appeared in the Phil. Mag. and throwing the balance on Mr Gyde who alone, seems to have been in fault – I for one, will never consent to your paper not appearing in the Phil. Trans. – in consequence of what has occurred – & I trust it will be the general feeling of the Council –
