Markeaton <1>
Tuesday –
My dear Henry –
I again sent for Dr Baker today – Charles <2> have [sic] passed an uncomfortable night with his Cough – and he Dr B came accordingly about 1 o’clock – Charles coughed while he was here, which provokingly he would not do on the 2 former visits – and Dr Baker pronounced it to be decided Hooping-cough – Of course therefore I have but one course to pursue – namely to set off immediately on my return home – I mean to divide the journey & sleep at Glocester tomorrow, & reach home next day, thus giving time for my maids there to prepare for us – with fire in the Nursery – tea &c – for you know the post is two days in going – I am sorry to have my visit thus suddenly cut short – but to have staid longer under the present circumstances, nursing Charles instead of enjoying myself, would have been productive of little pleasure – Dear Charles is not ill enough to make the Journey bad for him – guarding him from draughts – in the railway.
I have not time for more – as I must pack up – but I will write to you from home on Thursday
Your affectionate
Constance. –
