Calton Hill Stairs <1>
21 Sept 1844

Dear Sir,

It has been suggested to Mr Adamson <2> and myself, to attend the meeting of the British Association <3> in York for the purpose of making Calotype Portraits of some of the eminent men who may be present. We can give no response to this suggestion until we learn whether you would feel inclined to sanction our being there for the above purpose. It is very uncertain even in the case of your being agreeable thereto that we could leave Edinburgh for this purpose but to enable us to entertain the prospect at all, I will feel very much obliged if you will take the trouble to inform me at your earliest convenience whether our presence there would be sanctioned by you whether you would permit us to dispose of Calotypes so made or what are the terms you are inclined to dictate as the Patentee, to enable us to use these privileges. The favor of an early reply <4> would be very obliging to

Dear Sir Your very obed Sert
