Veranda.
July 8th 1846
My dear Sir,
I have had much business or shd have written to you at Ambleside; <1> and afterwards thought that you wd have left.
I feared that you wd not find much in that region, as I think distant and general landscapes are some of the last subjects for Photography, i,e [sic] until we can have much larger Cameras and paper.
Enclosed is a list of my 2nd Series, which I think will in general yield much finer copies than the 1st set: as the negatives have been left a much longer time in the Camera. I wish exceedingly to accept your kind invitation and bring them with me, but my Aunts affairs <2> still demand my constant presence.
I shd be very much obliged for copies of my remaining 1st series pictures, about 20 of each size remain, which I have not seen.
It wd give me great pleasure to see your Reading establishment: <3> I think it probable that we may ere long leave Wales entirely, as my poor Aunt has been in a manner left on my hands, and I must look out for a Living to render her latter days more comfortable. Has Henneman <4> brought any thing new from Paris in the Camera way?
Yours most truly
Calvert R Jones

3. Nicolaas Henneman (1813–1898), born in Holland and trained in Paris, was WHFT’s valet who emerged as his assistant in photography. Henneman set up his Calotype works at 8 Russell Terrace, Reading. Commencing operations at the start of 1844, it functioned both as a photographic studio and as a photographic printing works and continued through late 1846, at which time Henneman transferred his operations to London. Although Talbot supported Henneman through custom, such as printing the plates for The Pencil of Nature, and loans, it was always Henneman's operation. His business cards made no mention of "The Reading Establishment," the designation that it is popularly given today; the only contemporary use of that title seemed to be by Benjamin Cowderoy - see Doc. No: 05690 - and in Henneman's initial correspondence with WHFT. Note that Jones capitalises the town of Reading but not 'establishment' - his meaning is presumably Henneman's establishment at Reading, rather than a reference to a proper name.
