I have this morning drawn out a rough estimate of expenses to the end of our stay at Edinburgh – and I hasten to sent it to you, with a request that you will allow me a remittance of a portion of it with as little delay as possible – for I have only 2 or 3 pounds lift in my purse – which is awkward in a place there are constant calls upon it – Perhaps you could let me have £300 first; and by the time that is finished, I should have a more accurate idea of the sum which would be required to carry us on to the end. I think I have probably overstated some of the particulars & understated others – and besides we might be inclined to make a little change in our scheme of operations with regard to amusements. – We know about the expense of one large party – but we cannot reckon exactly about 2 or 3 very small réunions which we propose to have soon on Rosamond’s account. We think she will soon be well enough to enjoy a few intimate friends at home although she will not be able to go out for some time – particularly to late parties & balls – she will be obliged to cover her head & tie something under her chin till all mark has passed off – and this is a very <ill.del.> slow process indeed – D^r Moir talks of putting on a little adhesive plaster tomorrow if he finds it ready – and when once she is able to leave off lotions & formentations, I hope the recovery will progress much more rapidly and without his constant attendance – You see I have ventured to reckon the doctoring item as low as £20ּ and perhaps it may sink still lower, if all goes on well after another week or two. We had a nice letter from Charles today – he seems much pleased with some new arrangement which separates the lower sixth from the upper fifth, and gives the former more time to themselves. It was very fortunate your meeting with D^r Vaughan & having the opportunity of a Talk with him.

Yesterday I contrived to place in the hands of M^r Ross, the Photoglyphs which you left here for him – He wrote with the warmest expression of thanks to you; and talks of being at Edinburgh again some time next month. Today a heavy packet addressed to you has made its appearance – It proposes to come from Kemp & Company; Instrument makers – but with no further explanation – Is it right? – We have had some very beautiful days since you went away but yesterday & today are stormy – with splendid effects of light over the Firth –
