Vittoria

Thursday 19 July 1860

My dear Constance,

I arrived here on the evening of the 12th, but unfortunately was attacked with illness the same evening & kept my bed several days- This was owing to the heat of the weather & fatigue, but more especially to the vile Spanish Cookery. I found a friendly Doctor who cd speak a little french.

My travelling servant is invaluable<.> The most attentive nurse possible, and a very clear headed man so that a great many directions given to him at once do not embarrass him.

This morning I propose to leave Vittoria- I shall be most happy to quit Spain- I stop at Biarritz for sea bathing – address Poste Restante Biarittz Bayonne

The eclipse took place yesterday in marvellously fine weather<.> I saw it very well from my window 4 or 5 planets & stars shown out-

Adieu

Yours Affly

Henry

I think I shall send you a telegram to announce my safe return to French soil therefore do not be alarmed at receiving one-
