Je profite de l’occasion que le gouvernement <2> envoye un Courrier en Italie pour vous écrire quelques lignes. Comme je crains que je ne pourrai pas être présent à la réunion scientifique <3> qui aura lieu cette année à Pise, je désirerais envoyer un paquet de mes dessins photogéniques <4> comme témoignage de mon estime pour les savans Italiens. Voudriez vous prendre la peine de recevoir cet envoi, et d’en faire la distribution parmi les membres de la réunion scientifique de la manière qui vous semblera la plus convenable? Si je reçois votre réponse à temps je pourrai envoyer à la fin de Septembre ce paquet. Dites moi seulement quelle est la meilleure manière de l’envoyer. Si je trouve quelque ami qui va se rendre à Pise je peux les lui confier.
Cet art de faire les images par la lumière, que j’ai appellé Dessin Photogénique, a été inventé par moi dans l’année 1834 – J’en ai donné une description dans le Philosophical Magazine pour Mars 1839. <5> Je les ai montré publiquement pour la première fois le 25 Janvier de cette année.
Il me serait très agréable, Monsieur, de renouveller l’ancienne connaissance que j’ai avec vous, et qui date de l’année 1822 époque de mon prémier voyage en Italie – Ne viendrez vous pas encore nous faire visite en Angleterre?

Dear Sir
I am taking advantage of the occasion of the government sending a Courier to Italy to write you these few lines. As I fear that I will not be able to be present at the scientific meeting that will take place this year in Pisa, I would like to send you a package of my photogenic drawings as an expression of my esteem for the Italian scientists. Would you be willing to take the trouble of receiving this dispatch and of distributing it amongst the members of the scientific meeting as you see fit? If I receive your response in time I will be able to send the package at the end of September. Only tell me what is the best way to send it. If I am able to find some friend who is going to go to Pisa, I can entrust him with them.
This art of making images with light, which I have called Photogenic Drawing, was invented by me in the year 1834 – I have given a description of it in the Philosophical Magazine of March 1839. I showed them publicly for the first time on January 25th of this year.
It would be very agreeable for me, Sir, to renew our old acquaintance, which dates back to 1822, the period of my first journey to Italy – Will you not be coming to pay us a visit in England again?

2. William Thomas Horner Fox Strangways, 4th Earl of Ilchester (1795–1865), botanist, art collector & diplomat, worked for the foreign office at this time.
3. In 1839, Pisa hosted the first Congress of Italian Scientists.
