Vostro Devotissimo servitore.

Translation:

To Mr W. H. Talbot

The date of the Scientific Meeting of Turin is approaching and you have not yet sent me the Photogenic Drawings which, according to your wishes, I should present before that Assembly. I therefore repeat to you that I await them and that it will be a great pleasure for me to show them to our Italian Scholars.

Those which you sent to me through the Government Post and which, as you know, reached me several months after your much-valued letter, were viewed and quite praised by many people in my home. The Daguerre drawings are certainly surprising and it does not seem possible to reach such precision of contour on the paper but I tell you that some of our skilful painters consider the Talbot drawings superior in their strength and in the ease with which the Artist can alter them by hand here and there, according to requirement, in order to create a picture of good effect.

On the other hand, as well as having a price which is much lower than that of the silver-encrusted plates, the paper can be transported with greater ease on long journeys.

I therefore congratulate you and am delighted to hear that your studies continue to address themselves to objects of use to science and to the arts.

If I may serve you in any way in this country, you need only command me, and in the meantime I am honoured to declare myself with deep esteem and consideration,

your most devoted servant.

To Mr Talbot

Notes:

1. The second Congress of Italian Scientists. In 1839, Pisa hosted the first Congress of Italian Scientists. WHFT had intended to send specimens of photogenic drawing in time for that conference, but was delayed until this, the second Congress of 1840, in Turin.

2. Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre (1787–1851), French artist, showman & inventor.
