Monsieur,
Je prends la liberté de vous envoyer une théodolite <1> que j’ai eu le malheur de laisser tomber – Il me paroit que le fond de la boite est enfoncé, ce qui a deplacé le cercle, de sorte qu’il ne repond plus au vernier. Je vous serai infiniment obligé de l’arranger pour moi, et de me l’envoyer à Rome à la douane, en m’avertissant par une lettre adressée “Poste Restante” comment, et quel jour vous l’envoyez. En même temps je vous prie de me faire construire un micrométre pareil à celui que vous m’avez montré, c’est à dire, formé d’un verre oculaire concave de long foyer, divisé en deux. Cela doitêtre [sic] de la grandeur convenable pour [illegible deletion] une lunette achromatique de 3 pieds foyer, et 3 pouces ouverture. Ecrivez moi s’il vous plait, combien de temps cela prendra pour être construit. Même avant l’accident qui est arrivé à mon théodolite, je n’étois pas content du vernier. Je trouvois qu’il ne divisoit pas exactement le cercle en minutes, mais en des quantités sensiblement moindres. Si vous trouvez la même chose, il vaudroit mieux y adapter un nouveau vernier – Aussi le plan du vernier, n’étoit pas exactement dans le plan du cercle: de là naissoit une parallaxe qui empêchoit de lire avec certitude. J’espére que ces défauts disparaîtront, d’autant plus que l’instrument est d’un usage facile et commode, et un véritable bijou.
J’espére que vous avez reçu un petit mémoire anglais que j’ai laissé pour vous à Modene – Son auteur est M. Babbage, <2> très connu comme géométre ingénieux et profond.

Dear Sir,
I am taking the liberty of sending you a theolodite that I had the misfortune of dropping – it seems to me that the bottom of the box has broken, which has displaced the circle, in such a way that it no longer conforms to the vernier. I would be infinitely obliged if you could fix it for me, and send it to me at the customs office in Rome, informing me in a letter addressed “Poste Restante” how, and on what day you are sending it. At the same time I beg you to construct for me a micrometer like the one you showed me, that is to say, comprising a concave eyepiece with a long focus, divided in two. This is to be of a size suitable for [illegible deletion] an achromatic lens with 3 feet focus and 3 inches in aperture. Write to me please, to let me know how much time this will take to build. Even before the accident that happened to my theolodite, I was unhappy with the vernier. I found that it did not divide the circle precisely into minutes, but into noticeably smaller quantities. If you find the same thing, it would be better to adapt a new vernier – Also the plane of the vernier was not precisely in line with the plane of the circle: this produced parallax which prevented the taking of accurate readings. I hope that these faults will disappear, especially since the instrument is easy and convenient to use, and truly a gem.
I hope that you have received a short English essay that I left for you in Modena – Its author is Mr Babbage, renowned as an ingenious and expert surveyor.
