Chippenham
22. Augt 1854
Dear Sir,
I have been requested to mention to you that it is in contemplation to get an additional Curate appointed for Lacock, for which purpose an application has I believe already been made to the Curates Aid Society for a Grant, to such a Sum to be raised by voluntary Subscription. – Captn Gladstone, Mr Merewether, Sir John Awdry <1> & his Brother are willing to contribute and they would be glad to hear that the plan meets with your approval – I have no doubt that it is the intention of those more immediately interested in getting a Church erected on or near Bowden Hill to make the appointment of a second Curate accessory to such a step – In this Parish (Chippenham) we have for some years past received a Grant of £50· to meet about an equal Sum which is raised amongst a few friends of the Church – Perhaps you will kindly give the subject your consideration and at your convenience let me hear from you – With best compts to Mrs Talbot <2>
I remain dear Sir Your obliged Sert
West Awdry.
