Chippenham

30 April 1859

Dear Sir,

I enclose you Coll Boldero’s <1> retiring Address – I will give you the reasons wch caused it When I have the pleasure of seeing you – I hear that after all Mr Lowe <2> is was opposed at Calne by a Wine-Merchant there! of course to be beaten 3. to 1.

Captn Gladstone <3> is returned for Devizes at the head of the Poll.

Mr Griffith <4> second

Poor Mr Watson Taylor <5> no where!

Sir John Neeld <6> out for Cricklade – his place being taken by Lord Ashley <7>!

2 Conservatives for Weymouth in lieu of 2 Liberals –

Lord Edwd Thynne <8> for Frome instead of Mr Nicoll <9> the Tailor

Mr Way <10> – Conservative for Bath – beating Mr Phin <11> <sic> –

Salisbury has returned the two old Members

Next Week will give us the Counties –

1. Col Henry George Boldero (d. 1873), Conservative MP; sat for Chippenham from 1835 until his resignation in 1859.

2. Robert Lowe (1811–1892), Liberal MP; sat for Calne, 1859–1868, created 1st Viscount Sherbrooke, 1880. Was President of the Board of Health and Vice-President of the Education Board of the Privy Council, 1859–1864, and Chanceller of the Exchequer, 1868–1873.

3. Captain John Neilson Gladstone (1807–1863), MP.

4. Christopher Darby Griffith, Liberal-Conservative MP; sat for Devizes, 1857–1868.
