Monkton, <1>Chippenham.

Dear Sir,

Briersden and Wilkins <2> have looked at the Plantation at Nethermore <3> – there is about 3 acres (more or less) which they value at £42· pr Acre. There is a man at Devizes (who has been with me to-day) who is ready to take the whole at this price – paying by 3 instalments, in advance, cutting an acre and then paying for a second & so on. I looked into the church the other day, it is to intended to be reopened on the 10 Decr The Bishop of Salisbury preaching in the morning and Mr Fane in the afternoon – in addition to the reseating (the plan of which I believe you saw) Mr Caldwell <4> has put a new roof to the South <Transpel?>, and the Committee have done the same to the North Transpel <sic> – considerably raised, and opening the Arches – it appeared to be necessary to put a new roof in conseqce of the old one being found to be very defective The Organ remains where it was but the general feeling now seems to be that it should be removed to the Area – the Gallery certainly looks out of character with the rest of the Church. I had not time to look into the Abbey but will endeavor to do so next week. George Wilkins <5> reported all things well – Have you selected any pattern of paper for your Library? I shall be very happy to look to it during your absence if you wish it.

I am Dr Sir Yours obliged

West Awdry
