Chippenham <1>
5. May 1864

Dear Sir,

I have remitted £400· to Messrs Coutts & Co <2> on acct of your rents in addition to £400· remitted to the Bank of Scotland last Week – I have also remitted the first £1000· on account of the Mortgage – But find that the Stock which I have sold to produce the second £1000– will not be realized till the 16th in consequence of the unsettled state of the Money Market – You will see by the “Times” that the Bank of England have raised their rate of interest to £8– prCent If it will be inconvenient to you in settling your purchase to wait till the 16th I will ask my Bankers to advance the remaining £1000– charging no interest for it in the mean time – but I think it better to ask you the question in case the Vendors are not prepared to settle immediately –

I remain dear Sir Yours obliged
West Awdry.

H. F. Talbot Esq.
