Dear Sir.

I was on the point of riding over to Lacock to call on you this morning when I was unexpectedly detained till I found it too late. I have appointed the 29th inst for your Audit but hope to have the pleasure of seeing you ‘ere that, as I have several matters to mention to you – I was glad to see your Son <1> looking so much better last week – and am glad to find there is a probability of his taking his place on our Bench – in due time – I think he will make a very good Magistrate

If you see the local Papers you will observe there is a very strong feeling on the part of South Wilts against losing their County Gaol at Fisherton<2> and with it their Assize at Salisbury, but I think both are inevitable –

I remain Yours truly & Obliged
West Awdry

H. F. Talbot Esq

Lacock Abbey.

Notes:

1. Charles Henry Talbot (1842–1916), antiquary & WHFT’s only son.

2. Fisherton Anger, Salisbury, Wiltshire. Awdry knew that WHFT would have an interest in this, for he had inherited the advowson (the right to present a new Rector to St Clement's Church) from his father, Davenport Talbot, and held it until 1849. The new Rector would enjoy the income and assets of the living, including the Rector's house. St Clement's was demolished in 1852 and parts of it were incorporated into the new St Paul's Church.
