Chippenham <1>
16 June 1840
Dear Sir,
I took the liberty of suggesting a trifling alteration in the Notice which you have attached to the Requisition – i: e:
In compliance with the above Requisition I hereby appoint a Public Meeting (instead of the said Meeting) &c:
As the Devizes Papers are not published till Thursday there will be time for making the alteration if you think it desirable – I have addressed a Letter to the Mayor of Devizes <2> Requesting permission to use the Town Hall for the <illegible deletion> purpose intended, wch will of course be granted – but I thought as a Matter of Courtesy the application should be made before the Notice appeared.
I remain Dear Sir
Your obliged & obed Servt
West Awdry.
There is another Wiltshire Paper published at Malmsbury, on Saturday, Shall I send a Copy of the Requisition &c for insertion in it?Notes:
1. Chippenham, Wiltshire: largest town near Lacock, 3 miles N.
2. Richard W Biggs (d. 1883), Mayor of Devizes.
