Chippenham <1>

4 Nov: 1842

Dear Sir,

John Humphrys <2> has called on me today about planting the Land at Nethermore <3> which was grubbed last year – there are about 5½ acres which will take about 17 or 18,000 Trees – I have obtained Heale’s terms which I annex – I think no time should be lost if you decide on planting this Season perhaps you will be good enough to let me hear from you by Tuesday next.

Larch – from 3 to 4 feet high at £2– pr 1000.

Spruce – 2 to 3 feet high at 10/<s?> / pr 100

Scotch 2 to 3 feet high at 5/- pr 100

The proportions will be of

Larch about 16,000

Spruce – 500

Scotch – 800

1. Chippenham, Wiltshire: largest town near Lacock, 3 miles N.

2. John Humphries, gardener at Lacock Abbey in the early 1840’s.

3. Nethermore Farm and Wood, Lacock, Wiltshire.
