Dear Sir/
We are in want of some rough Stones for making Fences near Mortimer’s Copy hold & Mrs Ring’s Shop – I observe there is a large heap in the yard at the Abbey, near the Clock – Will you allow me to take some of the worst of these, wch will answer the purpose that I want them for, & will save much expence in the carriage alone – I was not certain whether you might have intended these Stones for any purpose at the Abbey & therefore would not touch them without first hearing from you –
I was very glad to receive, on Saturday last, an address from Captn Boldero <1> – announcing his intention not to come forward at the next Election – I trust this will make yours no longer doubtful & also prevent much expence – for tho’ I expect Mr Mayne <2> to appear on the Hustings & make a Speech, I do not expect that he will throw away his money in giving entertainments previously – I rejoice also, for the sake of the Parish – for a Contest generally does a great deal of mischief among the Tradesmen –
I am Dear Sir
Yr obliged Sert
W. H. Awdry
P.S.I beg a few Lines respecting the Stones – as soon as convenient –
