Chippenham <1>
20th April 1833

Dear Sir,

The Vestry agreed yesterday, to postpone settling the Contract for the Workhouse, for a fortnight – agreeably, with your recommendation – They have appointed the next Vestry, for Tuesday the 7th of May – previous to which, they will be glad to receive your opinion as to whether there is any chance of receiving aid from Government–

Mr Harman <2> Mr J. Awdry <3> & several Farmers attended & there was no opposition manifested [illegible deletion] to the Plan previously thought of – the Vestry considered it desirable to allow Proposals for a Contract, to be given in by any one, in order to secure the best terms for the Parish, but, of course, to give the preference to Tradesmen at Lacock, if the terms were nearly the same –

I have had a tolerably good Audit, but some Alarms expressed by the Farmers about the present reduced price of Corn & dullness of Trade – I hope, however that the latter will not long continue & I look with some confidence to an increased circulation, when the Business of the Bank Charter is settled –

I enclose a Bill sent by Mr Spragg <4> of Melksham <5> – on the Building Acct at the Abby [sic] – He sent a message to me about it a few days ago & as you are not likely to be in Wiltshire soon, I thought I had better send it to you –

I will remit to Messrs Hammersly’s <6> £500 – on Account – at the End of a fortnight The Bank here, will then make the Payment without Commission –

I am Dear Sir Yr obliged Servt
W. A. Awdry

P. S.
Should you wish the Payment made immediately to Hammersly’s – I will so by the next Post upon hearing from you. The Bankers charge 5s/ pCent, for remittances that do not remain with them a fortnight–
