Chippenham <1>
27th March 1830

Dear Sir,

I had hoped ‘ere this, to have made up your Account for last year & to have ascertained the Balance thereon – but I am sorry to say that Mr Hayward <2> has not yet settled the Balance of his Account & that is little short of £100 – I think I shall get it before the Audit wch is fixed for the 19th of April – but in the mean time I can pay £80 – whenever you may wish, as I observe by my Book, that I have about that Sum in hand – my principal reason for writing at this time, is to mention that I have been apprized by Mr Michell <3> of the near completion of the Deeds for Mr Montagu’s sale – & that the Purchase Money will probably be wanted in about a Month – He tells me, that the Deeds for the Title are very voluminous – these, as you are aware, are at Mr Montagu’s expence & Mr Michell has adhered to the arrangement wch he submitted for your approbation a few Months ago –

I have had some considerable disputes with Crocker upon his leaving the Farm at Inlands – but, I hope, shall eventually get it settled without having recourse to Law – I have also been under the necessity of resisting an act of aggression on the part of a Person who has a Field near Carrick’s Farm – the Man has had the assurance to stop up an ancient right of road thro’ his field to your Farm & I was consequently obliged to apply to Mr Michell for advice – He is so well satisfied of your right, by the evidence wch Carrick has brought forward (wch is of forty years standing at least) that he has written to the man upon the subject & has directed Carrick immediately to break down the Fence he has put up & let him bring an Action if he thinks proper – but the right appears so indisputable, that one can hardly suppose he will be so silly –

I feel much obliged by the present of your late Publication. I have been particularly interested in that part relating to County Elections, which, any one who has witnessed must feel, calls loudly for reform – it is satisfactory to observe how gradually the subject is advancing in public opinion –

I am going into Dorsetshire on Monday, for a few days, but hope to be at home by the end of the Week & that I may find Hayward’s balance, on my return – When you write be so kind as to say where you will have the same & what I have in hand paid on your account –

I am dear Sir yr much obliged –
W. H. Awdry
