Je vois avec plaisir par votre lettre du 9 Ct <1> que vous allez être promptement à Paris; en raison de votre arrivée tardive les personnes avec lesquelles j'ai pris des engagemens se désolent de voir perdre tous les jours les chances de succès que va éprouver par ce retard la mise en exécution des travaux Calotypes. <2>
Je crois que l'avocat que vous avez consulté n'a pas bien compris notre traité, c'est l'avis de mon conseil Monsieur Chevallier; <3> Mademoiselle Petit <4> vous le remettra aussitôt votre arrivée afin de ne plus éprouver de délais. Je ne doute pas que n'y apportiez le même empressement et que vous voudrez bien soumettre immédiatement au conseil que vous choisirez la seule question qui valide ou non notre contrat, et m'indiquer son nom afin que j'engage aussitôt Monsr Chevallier à se réunir à lui.
Plusieurs de nos jeunes gens sont choisis et arrêtés, leurs moyens d'existence dépendent de la prompte sollution [sic] de cette affaire - Nous sommes à même de vous soumettre les meilleures informations sur les produits Chimiques dont nous nous sommes fort occupés, également sur les chambres noires, lentilles perfectionnées &a; aidés par vos informations nous espérons pouvoir apprécier bientôt le cout du Papier préparé sur lequel est basée notre opération.

I am pleased to see by your letter of the 9th instant that you will arrive in Paris shortly; because of your late arrival, the people with whom I have made appointments are distressed to see the chances of success in setting up the Calotype works diminish with the passing days.
I believe that the lawyer you consulted has not understood our agreement properly, this is the opinion of my advisor, Mr Chevallier; Miss Petit will hand it to you as soon as you arrive in order to avoid further delays. I have no doubt that you will treat it with the same sense of urgency and that you will submit immediately to the counsel of your choice the only question that validates our contract or not, and let me know his name so that I can instruct Mr Chevallier immediately to meet him.
Several of our young people have been chosen and hired, their means of existence depend on the prompt resolution of this affair - We are in a position to submit to you the best information on Chemical products on which we have worked very hard, also on cameræ obscuræ, improved lenses &a; with the help of information from you, we hope soon to be able to estimate the cost of the prepared Paper on which our operation is based.

2. The 'Société Calotypique', as it was referred to in the correspondence, or sometimes 'Société Calotype,' was established by Bassano in 1843. WHFT ceded the French patent for the Calotype for ten years to Bassano, and while no official paper has been found on the business, a group of artists assembled to learn the art of the Calotype from WHFT and Nicholaas Henneman.
