My Dear Sir

I am very solicitous for the success of this Niniveh expedition and I certainly think that Rassam ought to be engaged if Rawlinson and Layard recommend it, which I understand they do. His knowledge of Arabic would be invaluable It would surely be very easy to come to an understanding with him that certain places pointed out by Mr Smith <ill. del.> before leaving England, such as the ruined library of Assurbanipal, &c. should be thoroughly excavated after which Mr Rassam should be at liberty to excavate where previous experience, or hopeful indications, might guide him. All the credit of explaining the inscriptions found, would fall to Mr Smith’s share and there could be no mistake, since I believe Mr Rassam is unable to read a single line of them – but he would have the credit of the mechanical part, the skilful direction of the excavations and management of the workmen &c. &c.

It would be a good thing if Mr Smith on arriving at Mosul were to find some antiquities for sale in the hands of the Arabs, for then he might send home some results at once. My address for a few days is 4 Circus, Bath.

Believe me Yours vy truly
