J'ai répondu à votre lettre le 29 Octobre ^<1> dernier, le lendemain de mon arrivée à Londres, et je regrette que vous ne l'ayez pas reçue avant votre départ de Paris.

Lors de mon séjour à Paris, je me suis occupé avec beaucoup de soin de votre affaire. Il n'est pas douteux que vous n'obteniez en justice la résiliation du contrat avec M. le Marquis de Bassano. ^<2> J'en ai causé avec un Avocat et un Avoué (solicitor) de premier mérite, qui tous deux partagent entièrement l'opinion que j'ai émise en votre faveur dès que vous m'avez parlé de cette affaire.

Quant aux frais à faire, je crois qu'ils s'éleveront à £60·· au moins, frais d'avoué, d'avocat, d'enregistrement compris. C'est une faible somme en comparaison des avantages que vous retirerez de l'exploitation en France de votre brevet.

Je suis tout prêt à faire commencer les poursuites judiciaires contre M. le M^quis de Bassano. Mais à cause des avances qu'il faudra faire, je vous prierais de m'envoyer les £60·· en question, plus une autorisation conforme au modèle ci-joint. L'autorisation comprise en votre lettre du 2 Octobre n'est pas suffisante pour agir à Paris.

Mon correspondant à Paris fera, si vous le désirez, quelques démarches amiables, mais je les crois tout-à fait inutiles: Vous n'avez rien à attendre de M. le M^quis de Bassano. Votre longanimité depuis plusieurs années en est la preuve. Vos interêts exigent une mesure décisive et énergique. Si vous me chargez de cette affaire, vous pouvez être persuadé, Monsieur, que j'y apporterai le plus grand zèle, afin que vous puissiez le plutôt possible rentrer dans la propriété de votre Brevet, que comme vous je regarde comme une valeur importante.

Je pense que pour éviter toutes difficultés, il faut que votre signature au bas du Power of Attorney, doive être soit légalisée par un Notaire ou par le Lord Mayor de la ville où vous demeurez; Puis cette seconde signature devra être legalisée Par le Consul général de France, ou l'un des vice-consuls de France en Angleterre. Il faut que M. de Bassano ne puisse pas nous opposer un vice de forme.Je pourrai me charger d'obtenir ici la légalisation par le Consul général de France.

Dear Sir,

I replied to your letter on the 29th of October, the day after my arrival in London, and I am sorry that you did not receive it before leaving Paris.

During my stay in Paris I devoted much attention to your business. There is no doubt that you should be granted the termination of your contract with Mr de Bassano in court. I discussed it with a Lawyer and a first-rate Solicitor who both wholeheartedly share the opinion I voiced in your favour from the very first time that you spoke to me of this matter.

Regarding financial outlay, I believe this will amount to £60·· at least, lawyer's and solicitor's fees and registration included. It is a modest sum in comparison with the advantages you will gain from exploiting your patent in France.

I am quite ready and to begin legal proceedings against the Marquis de Bassano. But due to advances that must be made, I beg you to send the £60·· in question, as well as an authorisation which follows the model enclosed here. The authorisation included in your letter of 2 October is insufficient to be acceptable in Paris.

My correspondent in Paris will take some out of court action if you so desire, but I believe that would be utterly useless: You can expect nothing from the Marquis de Bassano. Your long suffering over several years is proof of that. Your interests demand decisive and energetic measures. If you charge me with this matter, you can rest assured, Sir, that I will bring to it the greatest zeal, so that you can assume ownership of your Patent as soon as possible, which like you I consider to be of the utmost importance.

P. S. I think that to avoid any problems, it is necessary that your signature at the bottom of the Power of Attorney be authenticated by a solicitor or by the Lord Mayor of the town where you reside; then this second signature will have to be authenticated by the French consul general, or one of the French vice-consuls in England. It is imperative that Mr de Bassano be unable to oppose us on the grounds of a technicality. I could take care of obtaining the authentication by the French consul general over here.
