My Dear Sir,

Prof. Johnstone, <1> a particular friend of mine, who has been so good as to be the bearer of the accompanying packet, is a Candidate for the vacant Chair of University College. <2> If Mr Faraday <3> shd accept of it he will also be a candidate for the Institution <4> Chair, in which case your aid would be of great service to him. He is the finest Chemist of the present day in Great Britain and wd do honour to the Institute.
