En réponse à votre lettre d’hier <2> je m’empresse de vous dire que j’ai fort peu de rapports avec la Galerie au delà de mes opérations photographiques & que je sais à peine ce qui s’y passe. Je n’ignore cependant pas que Mr Jones le propriétaire de l’Institution annonce des lectures sur le Calotype, <3> auxquelles, malgré le desir que j’en avais, je n’ai pas eu le temps d’assister. Du reste je pensais que le “lecturer” avait peu de choses à m’apprendre, car je présume qu’il ne connaît pas votre procédé mieux que moi.
J’ai été tellement absorbé par mes occupations depuis votre départ que je n’ai pas eu le temps de considérer la question d’un arrangement avec vous pour pratiquer votre procédé. Cependant je suis toujours fort disposé à traiter avec vous si vous n’avez pas pris des arrangements avec d’autres personnes qui vous empêcheraient de m’accorder le droit d’employer le Calotype. Je vous avoue ce qui m’a un peu refroidi, c’est la condition que vous avez mise de recevoir un tiers des recettes brutes. J’ai considéré (& j’ai l’experience du Daguerreotype), que ⅓ des recettes serait beaucoup plus que les ¾ des bénéfices. Si vous pouviez être satisfait d’⅓ dans les bénéfices nets, je serais bientôt décidé & si j’obtenais de vous à ce prix le droit de pratiquer votre procédé, je vous assure que je m’y adonnerais avec une grande activité & que je ferais à votre invention l’honneur qu’elle mérite.
Je suis charmé que cette occasion me met à même de vous rappeler ce que j’ai eu l’honneur de vous dire à votre dernière visite, & j’espère que vous voudrez bien me favoriser d’une réponse,

Sir,
In reply to your letter of yesterday, I hasten to tell you that I have very little contact with the Gallery beyond my photographic transactions, & that I hardly know what happens there. I do, however, know that Mr Jones, the proprietor of the Institution, announced a series of lectures on the Calotype, which I unfortunately did not have time to attend, although I wanted to do so. Besides, I thought that the “lecturer” had little to teach me because I presume that he does not know your process better than I do.
I have been so absorbed with my affairs since you left that I have not had any time to consider the question of an agreement with you to use your process. Nevertheless, I am still very willing to negotiate with you as long as you have not made arrangements with other people which would prevent you from granting me the right to use the Calotype. I admit that what put me off slightly was your condition that you receive a third of the gross takings. I consider (& I have the experience of the Daguerreotype) that ⅓ of the takings would be far more than ¾ of the profits. If you could be satisfied with ⅓ of the net profits, I would soon be decided in the matter, and if I obtained the right the use your process at this price, I assure you that I would devote myself to it wholeheartedly, and that your invention would receive the honour which it deserves.
I am delighted that this opportunity enables me to remind you of what I had the honour of saying to you on your last visit, and I hope that you will oblige me with a reply,
