gn a licse to Mr Nightingale to make & sell portraits at Maldon & Witham

to make other pictures for his amusement if he pleases but not to sell any of ym

a single payment of fifty pounds –

I have no objn to make this license for portrait taking exclusive

if asked for, if particularly wished, but not aske. I do not wish recommend you in any case to offer to make it so, until unless asked for.

I think Mr Sheldon means, that he wants a license not only to practise the art but to sell the products – A general license of that kind I could not give.

If that is not his meaning, perhaps he will explain himself more clearly.

I cannot at present give any instructns ^as to Licenses that would be universally applicable – But cases strictly analogous to that of Mr Nightingale at Maldon might be replied to, having reference in a general way to the wealthiness of populatn of the district.

I return of the Circular & approve of itx I will forward the Harrison’s agreemt

If persons wish to take views of buildings ^for sale such as gentlemen’s seats, &c within a certain district as well as portraits, I thing that ^point might be included – I think the value of such a Licse shd wd be double of one for portraits only.

For a License for portrait taking in ye Eastn divisn the of Kent ye charge shd be, as you suggest, about 75 50 £ a year I would not for 1 establishment only at one time, but with liberty to move it from place to place

This license could not be exclusive. Indeed ^a licse for Ramsgate would b ought not to be thrown away. You might return As to guide books &c you propose 600 posves to be ye minimum at 4d each picture on a ¼ sheet. – artist’s expenses paid I believe these terms will do.

x except a trifling altern. Y One shd not unnecessly warrant a thing to be good, as it may produce trouble. We make it as good as we can but it is not perfect.
