J’ai reçu la lettre du 5 Oct. <1> dont Vous avez bien voulu m’honorer jointe au beau cadeau que Vous m’avez fait de la première et seconde partie de Vos recherches sur le calcul intégral.
Quoique je fusse accablé d’autres occupations dans les derniers temps, de sorte que je suis devenu quasi etranger aux mathématiques, je n’ai pu resister au vif désir de lire sur le champ Votre ouvrage, à cause de l’importance de l’objet et à cause de la grande clarté qui se présentait à moi déjà dans les premières lignes de ce bel écrit, clarté dont manquent trop souvent à mon avis, les productions mathématiques.
Votre travail m’a fait un très grand plaisir. Je Vous remercie très humblement et très sincèrement de ce précieux cadeau et je Vous assure que Vous m’obligeriez infiniment si Vous vouliez avoir la bonté de me faire parvenir les suites de Vos recherches. A la verité je n’ai pas à vous offrir de pareilles choses en échange, mais j’aurai l’honneur de Vous présenter mes faibles essais si Vous le permettez.
C’est le journal de mathématiques auquel je dois l’honneur de Votre connaissance et celle de Vos excellents travaux. Veuillez donc honorer le journal de la permission de recevoir Vos mémoires. Permettez, si cela se peut, de faire réimprimer dans le journal de mathématiques <2> les deux mémoires <3> que Vous m’avez envoyés. Il sera fait sur le champ et avec le plus grand soin. Les transactions philosophiques <4>, où Vos mémoires ont paru d’abord, ne peuvent presque servir qu’aux géomètres qui habitent une ville où se trouve une bibliothèque publique. Le journal contribuera donc peut-être à répandre encore d’avantage Vos découvertes. Ayez la bonté de m’informer par deux mots si Vous m’accordez cette permission.
Et si Vous voulez me rendre très heureux, Monsieur, faites moi parvenir encore d’autres de Vos travaux pour mon journal. Ils y seront reçus avec la plus grande reconnaissance.
En Vous réitérant mes sinceres remerciemens de Votre envoi, je Vous prie, Monsieur, d’agréer l’assurance de ma plus haute considération.

I have received the letter of October 5th which you did me the honour of sending along with your beautiful gift of the first and second parts of your research on integral calculus.
Although I have been busy with other occupations recently, to such an extent that I have almost become a stranger to mathematics, I was not able to resist the strong desire to read your work on the spot, due to the importance of the object and the great clarity which presented itself to me in the first lines of the writings, a clarity which in my opinion is all too often lacking in mathematical productions.
Your work gave me great pleasure. I thank you most humbly and most sincerely for this precious gift and assure you that you would oblige me infinitely were you to be so kind as to send me the rest of your research. In truth I have nothing similar to offer you in exchange, but I should be honoured to present you with my feeble attempts if you so permit.
It is the mathematical journal I have to thank for the honour of your acquaintance and that of your excellent works. Would you thus be so kind as to honour the journal with the authorisation to receive your memoirs. Allow me, if it is possible, to reprint in the mathematical journal the two memoirs which you have sent me. This will be done immediately and with the greatest of care. The philosophical transactions where your memoirs first appeared can hardly be of use to anybody but geometers living in a town with a public library. The journal will thus perhaps contribute to the further dissemination of your discoveries. Be so kind as to inform me briefly whether you accord me this authorisation.
And should you wish to render me very happy, Sir, send me more of your work for the journal. It will be received with the greatest recognition.
I reiterate my sincere gratitude for that which you have sent me and ask you, Sir, to accept the assurance of my highest consideration.
