Dear Sir
It is not by any means my intention to relinquish the editorship of the Photographic News, as I am convinced that it is quite possible to continue editing the two journals simultaneously. In order to properly conduct the Photographic News I am obliged to see nearly all the English & Foreign Scientific periodicals and it has long been an idea of mine that I was thus in possession of ample information to conduct a Chemical News on the same plan as the Photographic News, if such a periodical were once to be started.
The idea has gradually developed itself until by the assistance of some friends it has assumed the present form. You may not perhaps be aware that chemistry is the science to which I have chiefly devoted myself, and as I have the honor to number amongst my friends most of the first Chemists in England I shall have ample materials at my command wherewith to make a valuable periodical. With what success I employ these means remains to be seen I have great confidence in being to able to do justice to both periodicals but if I find I have over estimated my powers I shall at once relinquish the chemical Editorship for I will not have my name associated with a second rate journal if it can be avoided.
Believe me
truly Yours
William Crookes
