Boulogne
Saturday night Octr 29 1842
My dear Henry,
We arrived here at 20m past 4, after a fine passage of 3h 20m on board the “Duke of Wellington”, Captn Bashell. The carriage had to be embarked at 7, as the tide was ebbing; after which the Steamer went outside the harbour, & we went on board in a boat at one. Had we gone earler, we should have had to wait for the tide off Boulogne, before we could have entered the harbour, which is quite different to what it was when I last saw it, seven years ago, with a very long new jetty. We went first to the bureau de Police, where they are now so particular, that they entered the names of all the servants, & were even peu galans <1> eno’ to enquire the ages of Palmer & Stockdell! <2> – They kept Louis an hour & 1/2 at the Douanes, <3> & when it struck 6 insisted on doing no more today, so the carraige even will not be delivered up till tomorrow morning; when I shall proceed with all convenient speed.
Lebe wohl, lieber Brüder und schreiben mir bald <4>
Yrs very affly
Caroline
