Ostende
Hotel des Bains
Sunday morning
My dear Henry
I sit down according to my promise, to tell you of our safe & prosperous traversée. We were exactly 5 hours I think – for we started 10m after 2, & arrived shortly after seven – The morning broke very brightly, & it was quite fine sunshine when we steamed up the harbour. We could judge of the Swiftness of the boat, by seeing her skim past the long piers, when not of course at full speed.
I must say goodbye – for we shall be otherwise late – Baby was so good all night. – She slept in the carriage, & woke up as fresh as a lark, & very hungry – Charlie <1> was a very little sick once more – but is now quite revived – this is a disagreeable place – We start by ¼ p. 10 train – to Ghent first, & then perhaps beyond. I hate a long day’s railroad – it tires me more than anything – Charlie & Ernestine <2> send love & kisses – he can hardly think it was today he said goodbye to you –
Ever Yr affte Sister
