I never did see a pen–knife with eighteen–hundred blades. I will give you a commission for something not so difficult to find. C’est de tâcher de me trouver dans les boutiques à Lyons, une demi-douzaine de feuilles de papier à dessiner, pareil à l’echantillon ci-inclus. Je voudrois aussi une douzaine de crayons (chalk,) noirs, très–mous. Si tu demandes dans les boutiques du crayon noir pour dessiner à l’estompe, le plus mou qu’on puisse trouver, on saura ce que cela signifie. – Le Baron de Zach a diné avec nous il y a quelques jours, et il nous a montré une lettre de toi qu’il a fait imprimer dans sa correspondance Astronomique. <2> We were all charmed to see you in print. <3>

2. It is to try to find for me in the shops of Lyons, half a dozen sheets of drawing paper like the enclosed sample. I should also like a dozen black crayons (chalk), extra–soft. If you ask in the shops for black crayon for drawing with the stump, the softest that can be found, they will know what this means. Baron de Zach dined with us a few days ago, and he showed us a letter from you that he has printed in his Astronomical correspondence.
