Votre Mere

My very dear son,
I was delighted to receive your lovely little letter, for I always like to hear your opinions on all sorts of subjects. I am most cross that I have been nowhere since my last Letter, so I cannot entertain you with any topographical descriptions. Your sisters are both here, Caroline is in wonderful form, but the youngest is tortured by very painful chilblains on her feet. Today I caught a pretty little mouse, that I put in a box. You wouldn’t believe how very tame and soft he is. He was crossing the floor & I took him in my hand, without any trouble. It is a shame that your garden is filled with mud:
Alkekengi would appear to be your most faithful friend amongst the flowers.
I am with the greatest of affection
Your Mother
