My Dear Henry

Mrs Norton’s <2> verses are very good – clever & severe even to bitterness. It is a curious coincidence that she should have published them just before the elopement. The other character she describes is meant for the Duchess of Sutherland <3>

Tell me if you know anything of Caroline’s <4> movements, I suppose she will write to <Mihola?> when she is to be expected

1. Bowood House, nr Calne, Wiltshire, 5 mi NE of Lacock: seat of the Marquess of Lansdowne.

2. Caroline Elizabeth Sarah Norton (1808–1877), poet, novelist. The verses were probably The Dream, and other poems (1841), dedicated to the Duchess of Sutherland.

3. Lady Harriet Elizabeth Georgiana Howard, Duchess of Sutherland. (d. 1868).

4. Caroline Augusta Edgcumbe, née Feilding, Lady Mt Edgcumbe (1808–1881); WHFT’s half-sister.
